Frequently Asked Questions
What does a wealth manager actually do?
A wealth manager helps you make informed financial decisions throughout every stage of life. While investment management is an important part of the role, wealth management also includes retirement planning, estate and legacy planning, philanthropic planning, coordinating with other professional advisers, and helping ensure your financial decisions work together to support your long-term goals.
Who do you typically work with?
We work with individuals, families, business owners, professionals, retirees, charities and foundations seeking thoughtful, long-term financial advice. Many of our clients have international lifestyles, assets in multiple countries, or financial affairs that benefit from coordinated planning
How do I know if GW International is the right fit for me?
The best way to find out is through an initial conversation. Rather than focusing on account size alone, we seek clients who value long-term relationships, thoughtful planning and disciplined investment management. Our objective is to understand your circumstances, answer your questions and determine whether we are the right adviser for your needs.
Why choose an independent wealth manager?
Independence allows us to focus on your objectives rather than promoting proprietary investment products. We believe advice should begin with understanding your circumstances and selecting solutions that are appropriate for you, wherever those opportunities may be found.
How do you charge for your services?
Most clients choose our commission-based service, with all costs explained clearly before any investment decisions are made. Our charges are competitive within the industry, and our focus is not on individual transactions, but on building long-term relationships based on trust, sound advice and consistent service. Clients with investment portfolios of USD $500,000 or more have the option of transitioning to a fee-based arrangement if that better suits their circumstances and preferences. We are happy to explain both approaches and help you determine which is
most appropriate.
What happens during our first meeting?
Our first meeting is a simple telephone conversation. It is an opportunity to learn about your circumstances, financial objectives and any questions or concerns you may have. There is no obligation, and no investment decisions are made. It’s an opportunity for us to get to know one another and determine whether we’re a good fit to work together.
Will I still make the final investment decisions?
Yes. We provide advice and recommendations, but you remain in control of your financial affairs. We believe the best decisions are made collaboratively, with clients understanding both the opportunities and the risks before proceeding.
Can you work alongside my existing accountant or solicitor?
Absolutely. We regularly work with accountants, solicitors and other professional advisers. Coordinating these relationships often leads to better-informed decisions and helps ensure your financial strategy remains consistent across different areas of your life.
How do you build an investment portfolio?
Every portfolio begins with understanding your objectives, time horizon, income requirements and tolerance for risk. We then develop a diversified investment strategy designed to support your long-term financial goals while remaining flexible as circumstances evolve.
How do you manage investment risk?
Risk management is an essential part of successful investing. Diversification, disciplined asset allocation, careful investment selection and regular portfolio reviews all play an important role in managing risk while pursuing long-term growth.
How often should my financial plan be reviewed?
A financial plan should be reviewed regularly and whenever significant life events occur, such as retirement, the sale of a business, receiving an inheritance, changes in family circumstances or major tax or legislative changes. As your life evolves, your financial plan should evolve with it.
Can you help if I'm approaching retirement?
Yes. Retirement planning involves much more than deciding when to stop working. We help clients evaluate retirement income, investment strategy, spending needs, healthcare considerations, estate planning and the long-term sustainability of their financial resources.
Can you help with estate and legacy planning?
Yes. While legal documents are prepared by your solicitor or other qualified legal professional, we help clients develop an overall estate and legacy planning strategy that reflects their wishes and integrates with their broader financial plan.
When should I start estate planning?
Earlier than most people think. Estate planning is not only about what happens after death. It also involves preparing for unexpected illness or incapacity and ensuring trusted individuals are able to make financial or healthcare decisions if necessary. Beginning the conversation early generally provides the greatest flexibility and peace of mind.
What happens if I become unable to manage my financial affairs?
Planning ahead can make an enormous difference. We encourage clients to consider appropriate legal arrangements, such as financial and healthcare powers of attorney, and to ensure their financial affairs are organised before they are ever needed. While no one can predict the future, thoughtful preparation can significantly reduce uncertainty for both you and your family.
Can you help with charitable giving and planned giving?
Yes. We help clients incorporate philanthropy into their broader financial plans, whether through lifetime giving, legacy gifts or other charitable strategies. We also work with charities and foundations on long-term investment and financial planning.
Can you work with clients who live internationally?
Yes. Many of our clients have international careers, family members living overseas or assets located in multiple jurisdictions. We understand the additional planning considerations that often accompany an international lifestyle and work closely with clients and their professional advisers to help coordinate these matters.
What if I only need advice on one aspect of my finances?
That’s perfectly acceptable. Some clients initially seek advice on a specific issue, while others require a broader wealth management relationship. We are happy to discuss your circumstances and determine the most appropriate way to assist.
Can I access my assets whenever I need them?
Yes. Your assets remain yours and are available to you whenever you choose. If investments need to be sold to provide cash, the proceeds are normally available following the standard settlement period applicable to those investments.
How do I become a client?
The first step is simply to contact us to arrange an introductory conversation. If, after getting to know one another, we both believe the relationship is a good fit, we will explain the next steps and guide you through the account opening and onboarding process.
